Sunken Meadow Marsh Restoration

Our Goals
Complete a 78-acre salt marsh restoration within Sunken Meadow State Park, in Suffolk County.
What We鈥檙e Doing
Phase 1: Collaborating with engineers to develop the restoration design plan.

约炮视频 is working to design and complete a 78-acre salt marsh restoration project within Sunken Meadow State Park on the north shore of Long Island. Using a suite of restoration techniques, the project will improve habitat that has been degraded due to an earthen dam that blocked tidal flow to the marsh from the 1950s to 2012, with an emphasis on increasing high marsh habitat for the Saltmarsh Sparrow.

The project provides educational opportunities for high school students in Title 1 school districts in to learn about salt marshes, attend field trips to Long Island marshes, and participate in our Salt Marsh Stewards program. The students will also participate in community science by experimenting with techniques to grow salt marsh grasses in their classrooms that will be used in the Sunken Meadow salt marsh restoration.

Thanks to our project partners: NYS Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, Save the Sound, and New York Natural Heritage Program.
