Filmmaker Tomas Koeck has worked for more than two years to highlight the importance of the Atlantic Flyway in his new film Flyway of Life. In this work, he features the importance of Florida and the Everglades in particular 鈥 with interviews with 约炮视频's Jerry Lorenz and Kelly Cox 鈥 so we sat down with him to ask a few questions about his experience.
Q. When someone says the word "flyway," what do you want them to imagine?
A. I love the term 鈥渘ature鈥檚 highway鈥 when describing flyways. But what I have truly learned is how these migration paths connect all these amazing environments together. You always hear about the beautiful interconnection of nature, but rarely do you get to see the true extant of it.
Q. There are so many important places on the Atlantic Flyway - why did you choose to zoom in on Florida, and the Everglades in particular?
A. As 约炮视频 Florida鈥檚 Director of Everglades Policy Kelly Cox notes in the film, southern Florida, including the Everglades, acts as a funnel for many migratory birds that will travel down to Central America. Many species along the Atlantic Flyway travel into the Everglades.
Q. You talk a lot about Florida's flamingos in the documentary. What was it like to see them in person?
A. Flamingos are a hallmark bird that you see in many different places in media. Seeing them up close and personal was spectacular as you get a sense of how large they actually can be. Their pink color makes them very breathtaking to view and their flocking behavior on the salt flats and waterways also add to the fun of viewing them.
Q. Do you have a favorite memory from making the film?
A. What was amazing about the film is that it allowed me to appreciate habitats that I otherwise would not have sought out. Obviously there are the amazing moments I had with the wolves up on the subarctic tundra as well as other amazing wildlife moments 鈥 but it was truly rewarding for me to interact with all the amazing people that work hard to protect birds along the Atlantic Flyway. Jerry Lorenz, Kelly Cox, and Garl Harrold
are some of those environmental heroes that I had the privilege of collaborating with during our Florida section.
