Darrell Steinberg, Mayor of Sacramento, issued a proclamation today recognizing 2018 as the Year of the Bird. Sacramento Լ����Ƶ volunteer Kimberly Oldehoeft and  President Bill Bianco worked with the Mayor's office to issue the proclamation, which celebrates 100 years of protection for Sacramento birds through the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

2018 marks the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, one of the most powerful and important bird-protection law ever passed. In honor of this milestone, the Լ����Ƶ, along with National Geographic, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and BirdLife International have joined forces with more than 150 other organizations and millions of people around the world to celebrate 2018 as the “Year of the Bird.”

The proclamation highlights the importance of Sacramento for migratory birds as Լ����Ƶ and Bird Life International have recognized the wetlands of the Sacramento Valley as a Globally Important Bird Area and more than 250 species of birds have been seen in Sacramento.
